TOPIC 1: NZ’S CULTURAL ENVIRONMENT continuedNZ cultural environment
Who are the people who have made New Zealand home? Figures obtained from the government census 2006 (from Statistics NZ), show the percentage of people in NZ who class themselves as:- Maori 14.6% European 67.6% Asian 9.2% Pacific Peoples 6.9%
It should be noted that in the 2006 census there were 11.1% who classed themselves as ‘New Zealander’- indicating identification with our unique NZ culture, rather than a particular ethnic group. In this topic we have looked at the NZ culture, a mix of Maori and European cultures, and in the next topic we will look at Maori culture.
